On March 30th, 2024, Colton Skero was involved in a tragic accident: a gas explosion at his home left him with 90% body burns, 40% of which are 3rd degree. The first responders on the scene came from Station 81 and made a quick decision to have him lifeflighted to the Memorial Hermann Burn Center in Houston, Texas where he is currently receiving the best care.
It’s going to be a long road for Colton. Doctors have estimated he’ll need 15-30 surgeries and three months in the hospital. Already, he has undergone six of those surgeries and is receiving daily speech and physical therapy. Simply having his bandages changed daily presents the most excruciating pain for him. The continued remarks from his caretakers, however, is that he is making incredible progress. Colton is fighting day by day, finding strength through his faith in Christ, his supportive family and friends and the God-given will to live.
Colton and his family are thankful to everyone who has offered prayer, words of encouragement, monetary support, genuine concern and abundant love towards him. While this life-altering situation might tempt some to despair, we believe God has a greater purpose and will do mighty things through Colton’s determination to press forward! We have so many reasons to hope.

It doesn't seem like there are many people on earth who don't already know and love Colton, but if you're one of the few, we'd be delighted to introduce you!
He is a 24-year-old hardworking, Jesus-loving guy from Texas with a very special servant’s heart. He has a faithful and lovely girlfriend he adores (her name is Leeah), and a mother, brother and sister-in-law who have all but moved into the burn unit waiting room (Brandy, Brandon and Savanna.)
He is a '22 alumnus of Southwestern Christian University where he bowled competitively, worked as an RA and happily drove bus and ran sound for the One Voice group. He has served on the cook team for the Hellfighters ministry, he has been a camp counselor all over the country, and he serves as a treasurer and sound guy at his own local church. Before his accident, he was working for his uncle’s furniture store (Skero’s Furniture) on the delivery team.
Perhaps the most defining quality about Colton is that ANYTIME there is an opportunity to serve others and help further God’s kingdom, he is all about it. He is steady, and he is ready to care for the needs of others whenever they arise—and he does so without complaint. He’s the kind of guy who makes destination trips to Buc-ee’s with friends just for fun, spends 12 hours of his day-off to paint lines on the church basketball court, decorates his car with a Christmas tree and lights just to see the grins it puts on faces, goes out of his way to pick up cousins on an already long trip home to make sure that the whole family could be together for the holidays, will make a connection with every single person in the room, never forgets to give a hug on his way out, and will lay down his life to walk through a hard season alongside any dear friend or family member.
He’s our guy with the warmest grin and the sunshine soul. And now he’s in the hard season— perhaps the hardest one any of us can imagine—so it’s our turn to lay down what we can and walk alongside him. To be the kind of support that he has been to many throughout his life so far.

Colton believes in the power of prayer.
While Colton is suffering from this terrible accident, we have already seen God do miraculous things through the many people lifting him up in prayer. So please, do not stop--keep Colton in your prayers and let’s continue to encourage this young man in his battle!
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
